And I forgot to say the champagne was a bargain find: Tattinger, a brand I don't normally aspire to, but made possible by the champagne glut this year - so if you are planning a celebration in the next few months, go to tesco for some great deals and push the boat out!

That's great and I'm interested in whether/if men do more/the balance is better or roles reversed, will momentum be gained and 'rights' of all people, men or women, who raise a family or care for elderly relatives be recognised/rewarded/resourced by wider society?

Katy, I am sure that what you say is entirely accurate in many cases. I would want to append, though, that it does not *have* to be the case and I would hope that in an increasing number of homes the roles are negotiated between the couple (and any older children if they have them) so that although lives must change, there is an agreement reached about who loses and who gains in each change. Here, for example, I generally did the taking to and from school because it was easier for me to adjust my daily schedule. I have generally done the shopping, too, to the point where if Alison did it we never had the right things because she did not have the intimate knowledge of the pantry that I had!

When the children were born it was agreed that she'd do nappies if I did sick! In practice it did not work out so neatly, and we both did most things depending upon who was free at thge time.

Financially, my wife has always been paid more than I except when she was actually not working for a short while, of course (we were pretty broke then!) but we always knew it would be that way and that it would be tought when the children were little. I could not take the career break because the home comes with what I do! My hobbies certainly took a back seat when children came and have never recovered: I now await retirement. My wife finds time for swimming: I do not. I am not complaining: the children have left home now but if one of them needs fetching or home-moving, guess which parent drives hundreds of miles to provide the service!
