I’ve found a glitch with my Google Adwords  that was preventing people outside a 20 mile radius from seeing my ads. No response from Goofle tech team, so I’m recreating all 52 adverts to see if it works! Having a fun Friday….

The Big Ballet – The Size Does Matter Tour

“A comedy ballet of weighty elegance and adorable humour”

A ballet like no other ever seen before in the UK, Amande Concerts presents The Big Ballet, an ensemble of 16 Corps de Ballet dancers, each weighing no less than 16-Stone and united in a common cause; not to lose a single pound.

From Russia’s Ural mountains, a region from where Tchaikovsky himself hails, The Big Ballet formed in 1994 and set out to deliberately and, above all, self-confidently challenge accepted social standards in a world where the pursuit of slenderness and beauty seems obsessive. The dancers courageously and imposingly prove that grace, elegance, charisma and nimbleness is not the demesne of the “thin”, proudly presenting their voluptuous yet surprisingly sinuous and flexible figures.

I think New Year is a time to try for a bit of clarity – obviously not when you are drunk and falling over at 2am on New Year’s morning, but in the morning of New Year’s Eve, when hopefully you have had a few days holiday with family and a bit of head space. I find this a time of hopefulness, anticipation and excitement for the day and evening to come and even more excitement for the year ahead – even more than on Christmas morning, which after all, is just one day.

Of course if you haven’t got a plan for New Year’s Eve evening itself, it can feel as though the world is passing you by. Jools just doesn’t do it for me I’m afraid. Watching fireworks on TV is pretty rotten.

My blog from New Year’s Eve last year is still relevant. If you haven’t read it, have a look at: http://www.katy-brown.co.uk/2009/12/31/loneliness-the-modern-epidemic/

But one year on I have an evening with friends to look forward to. I have the whole year ahead to try for my goals, spend time with my family, help my children through the next stage of school, friendships and falling outs and – best of all – make my own plans.

Home

This year I am planning:New car

  1. To buy a newer Centerparcscar that doesn’t let me down
  2. To enjoy working on a home and garden that the three of us love
  3. To have a ball on holiday with my extended family in CenterParcs
  4. To work hard and smart on my business

These are Plans rather than Resolutions – my resolutions are much more boring and include the gotta do stuff like going to the gym more, but we all have those and that’s not what this blog is about. Same old, same old!

Goals are also often talked about at this time of year. But a goal must be measurable and achievable: like, just how are you going to work hard on your business then Katy? What form will it take, when, how often, how much – that’s the stuff of personal coaches. I will turn my plans into goals at some point, hopefully while I still have that New Year clarity and head space, but at the moment I’m just enjoying the privilege and fun of planning for myself.

What are your plans for the New Year? Discuss!

My attempt at installing a Christmas TreeI had planned a lovely Christmassy evening with my children yesterday – we bought the Christmas tree on the way home from school and – why oh why is it so hard?! I should explain here that this is the first time I have attempted this alone…

We donned Santa hats, put the Christmas carol CD on and tried to fit the tree into the stand we normally use. However, because I had bought the ‘non-drop’ tree type instead of the normal spindly tree, it wouldn’t fit. So we spent about 20 minutes with a hacksaw, thinning down the trunk (the non-drop needles going everywhere by now), but even though the trunk now fitted in the stand, still it wouldn’t balance.

So next we put the tree in a big, heavy outdoor terracotta pot…. lots of soil on the floor to add to the needles. Then my daughter spent an age fitting the lights whilst I unearthed an extension cable – only to find that the lights didn’t work (even though I had tested them before we moved house, making sure I got the working set – HA!…..changing the fuse didn’t work either – does this mean new lights needed?? I don’t know the answer to these questions anymore – although it seemed that I once did).

The children were arguing over the lights and decorations by now so we beat a retreat to the dinner and homework table, when CRASH – the tree tipped over. Driven to tears at this point – my first thought was, ‘who can I ring to help me sort this out?’  I have some marvellous male friends, some of whom live quite close by, but I took a look in the mirror at my red face and puffy eyes and pride kicked in. The children were totally bored with the whole process by now so decided to fill the wild bird feeder we had bought at the same time (more arguing, lots of bird seed to add to the soil and needles on the floor…)

A glass of wine and a little perspective later I thought – ‘I don’t need a man, I just need an F off great big pot!’ – My strawberry plants were binned and the strawberry planter duly dragged in (more soil and grit everywhere – hope the landlady isn’t reading this…)

So finally – SUCCESS – one reasonably straight tree with quite a few pine needles still intact, no lights or decorations YET, but seriously, how not to have a perfect child friendly Christmas.  : (

I was talking to a work colleague about promotion for the Extra Large Clothing website over a glass of wine one evening and we decided that big chaps want to feel accepted as part of the crowd. So we are planning next season’s photo shoot around groups of guys doing normal stuff like sitting in the pub – crucially wearing the same fashions as the next bloke – just in a bigger size.

Then we got chatting about what our customers would be doing in the pub, and for some reason we decided to have a competition to find the best chat up lines as part of our promotion… don’t ask me why – the reasoning was perfectly logical at the time, something to do with being one of the lads I suspect.

So, what’s your best chat up line?

I’ll be in the pub later, trying them out….
